About David's Work
David has maintained a Counselling & Psychotherapy practice since 1995. He provides secure and dependable space where people can come to explore past and present life issues. Over the decades since core training in humanistic and integrative counselling & psychotherapy, he has developed a practice that supports clients to heal, explore and grow.

Together, we (client and therapist) work with behaviours and cognitions, with body experience and symptoms, using empathy and attunement. Clients bring issues, concerns and anxieties. Both persons work together in the present, with what's happening in the therapy room. Whatever is of immediate concern or interest to the client - in family, in work, in relationships - is central. Where past experiences and long-standing patterns are making living today difficult, they become apparent in the room, and then deeper exploration naturally follows.

The objective is to enhance safety and self-protection, while building well-being. The natural human capacity to form and develop secure attachments, connecting with self and others is continually attended to. Attention is also provided to bring to light the ruptures that disconnect us, addressing them as they happen in the room. When we encounter such ruptures, we take care to repair them.

Key aspects of human life on earth are seen as being fundamental to well-being, and each can become a focus of the work when we discover issues relating to them. These aspects, which can be understood as biological systems we have for life on a living planet,  include:
  • living and working environment
  • interests shared with others
  • affectionate and sexual relationships
  • care-seeking and care-giving in all our relationships
  • inner relationship with the person's own self
The extent of the particular work needed for each client varies. Evidence of growth and change will be apparent in the various aspects of life listed above, as the client experiences increased vitality, curiosity and well-being. Duration of work needed ranges from quite brief periods (sometimes fewer than 10 sessions). More extended ongoing work is often required, and is carefully negotiated according to what's therapeutic and manageable.
